How to Choose a Wedding Date in 2024

As a New York wedding planner, I know that choosing a wedding date is such an exciting moment for couples once they say "Yes!" And if you're reading this as a newly engaged couple, let me be the first to congratulate you with all my heart! Picking a wedding date may seem simple, and in some ways it is, but it does require a little extra thought and consideration. Your wedding date not only sets the vibe for your big day, it also impacts things like vendor availability and the overall ambiance of the day. An autumn wedding in late October is going to naturally feel different than an early June wedding in the spring. That's why it's important to make sure the date you chose ultimately aligns with your wedding day vision. If that feels like a lot - don’t worry! Today, I'm sharing five tips that will make this process a little easier for you. And if you'd like more assistance, learn more about working with us here!

#1 Research Local Events In Your City

Before you '“save the date”, you’ll want to take the time to research local events that might be happening in your city around the time of your wedding. Popular festivals or concerts can draw large crowds and make it tough to secure vendors and hotel blocks. On top of that, you’ll also want to consider potential traffic and parking issues. By paying attention to these details before you reserve your date, you'll help ensure a smoother and more enjoyable experience for you and your loved ones on your special day! Especially if you have a considerable number of guests traveling into the city from out of town!

#2 Choose Your Venue First

When it comes to choosing a date for your wedding, one of the most important factors to consider is the availability of the venue. If there's a specific venue you have your heart set on, I highly recommend booking it well in advance to avoid any potential disappointments. I also always recommend couples be flexible (if possible) with their date instead of falling in love with a specific date and letting that restrict your venue options.

#3 Confirm Your Wedding Date with any “Must Have” Vendors

Before officially signing the dotted line and paying the venue deposit, consider checking the availability of your favorite planner, photographer, or other essential vendors. These vendors tend to book up fast (because they are one of the first vendors that a couple will book), so if you know there is someone you want to work with, it's worth sending a quick email to ensure they're available before finalizing your wedding date.

#4 Consider the Season

Next, when it comes to picking a date for your Long Island wedding, don't forget about the season and weather! There's no "bad" time to tie the knot, but we are definitely a “four season state” and it almost goes without saying that the weather can really shape your big day. New York summers? Hot and humid, especially in the city. Winters? Snowy and freezing. Springs are usually mild, but expect some rain showers. Autumn? Warm days, cool evenings—one of my favorite seasons for a Long Island wedding.

#5 Book Your Wedding Planner First

I might be biased but before you set a specific date or make any arrangements with your venue or other vendors, I highly recommend you book your wedding planner. the earlier you book your wedding planner, the better off you are making informed decisions from the get-go. Our primary responsibility (and deep joy) is to provide you with guidance and unwavering support throughout your wedding planning journey. We'll help you handpick the perfect venue and curate your dream team of vendors. Don’t worry - you’ll still get to do all the fun stuff!

Choosing a 2024 Wedding Date in New York

As a wedding planner on Long Island, I want to end by saying that there are a lot of moving pieces when it comes to planning a wedding, and I get that it can be overwhelming at times. Choosing a date is just the beginning, but don’t worry - that's where I step in! One of the absolute best parts of my job is getting to know how couples met, their vision for the big day, and creating a wedding that screams their dream! I don't do cookie-cutter events. I take on just a handful of weddings each year so I can give each one the attention and detail it truly deserves.
